What a perfect movie for a dumb teenage boy to watch and completely misunderstand! I embraced this movie so wholeheartedly that I threw away a pair of Nikes I had just bought in defiance of consumer culture (only to subsequently replace them with a pair of Dr. Martens...also somehow in defiance of consumer culture?). I'm still pissed about those Nikes, and I still enjoy this movie.

Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow

Director: Tim Burton

Date: February 12, 2000

I saw this movie on a date. I had a cold, but I didn't want to cancel because I really liked her. I'm still blown away by the gothic set design, Emmanuel Lubezki's beautifully dark cinematography and Danny Elfman's eerie, romantic score. The movie is not the slightest bit scary, but it sure seems as though it should be. Also, it was a great date.

Dogma
Dogma

Director: Kevin Smith

Date: January 21, 2000

When Dogma came out I had just angrily gone through the Confirmation process at church after spending a lifetime of Sunday mornings sitting in a pew being nudged awake by my mother. So naturally, I loved Kevin Smith's "epic" about fallen angels trying to exploit the hypocrisy of modern Catholicism in an effort to reenter heaven.

I haven't seen this since then, and probably shouldn't. That being said, I do remember loving Alan Rickman's performance, and Alanis Morissette's casting as God seems about right.

Eyes Wide Shut
Eyes Wide Shut

Director: Stanley Kubrick

Date: September 26, 1999

This was the first ticket stub I decided to keep. Like many people my age, my entry point to Stanley Kubrick had been seeing The Shining on TV. I loved that so much that I started renting all of his other films. He is a great director to study for anyone with a budding interest in film, as he dipped his toes in so many different genres and managed to redefine them one by one.

He died before Eyes Wide Shut premiered, so I knew it would be my last chance to see a Kubrick movie in theaters. The cinematography and minimalist piano score are both so hypnotic that I left the theater and just wandered around for a while, replaying and analyzing the film in my head; a practice that at the time was new but is now routine. I kept this ticket stub because I wanted to remember that feeling.

Fight Club

Date: January ?, 2000

What a perfect movie for a dumb teenage boy to watch and completely misunderstand! I embraced this movie so wholeheartedly that I threw away a pair of Nikes I had just bought in defiance of consumer culture (only to subsequently replace them with a pair of Dr. Martens...also somehow in defiance of consumer culture?). I'm still pissed about those Nikes, and I still enjoy this movie.

Sleepy Hollow

Director: Tim Burton

Date: February 12, 2000

I saw this movie on a date. I had a cold, but I didn't want to cancel because I really liked her. I'm still blown away by the gothic set design, Emmanuel Lubezki's beautifully dark cinematography and Danny Elfman's eerie, romantic score. The movie is not the slightest bit scary, but it sure seems as though it should be. Also, it was a great date.
